Q
Love this! Are you still working on this project? Do you still need illustrators? Is it ready to order?
A

Hi!

There is one letter left that we haven’t finalized, though we have been in contact with some other interested artists.  If you would be interested in illustrating G is for Gender Bender and you’d like us to send you the submission guidelines and more information about the process, please e-mail us at radicalphabet@gmail.com.

Stay tuned to hear more about how you can support the project and order posters! Thanks!

Q
I get the "X is always for xylophone" thing, but don't you think that X should be for, well, X -- as in Malcolm X, reappropriating unpersonhood and wearing it as a badge of honor?

Yes, we got that suggestion after we already decided on our alphabet.   It’s a really great suggestion- maybe in version number 2 of the radicalphabet that focuses on important historical liberation activists! :)

Q
Are you still looking for artists to illustrate words for the project?
A

Yes! We are definitely still looking for artists.  The words that are still available are Boycott, Know Your Rights, Racial Justice, Values, and Youth.  E-mail us at radicalphabet@gmail.com for more information and the submission guidelines.

Q
Hello Radicalphabet! If you're still looking for artists, I would love to get involved. I'm interested in illustrating Xylophone or Oral Histories. Tumblr won't let me include links, so please get in touch if you'd like to see my work or for further discussion. This project sounds excellent. Regards, Laura Szumowski

Hi, Laura,

We would love to have you illustrate Xylophone.  Please contact us radicalphabet@gmail.com so that we have your e-mail and from there we can e-mail you the submission guidelines.

Thanks!

Q
What is radical about xylophones?
Anonymous
A

Good question, one we’ve been fielding a lot!  Our choice of Xylophone for X was a little tongue in cheek- a nod to the fact that X is *always* for xylophone (since there are so few X words) and a gesture towards not taking ourselves too seriously.  We were clear about wanting each letter to represent a positive concept, something we want in the world we’re struggling to create.  This led us to reject some suggestions such as Xenophobia which, while being relevant to a radical social justice agenda, is something we’re striving to eliminate.  Around the time we were working on the alphabet, one of the collective members coincidentally also heard a somewhat magical story from some professional percussionists about the xylophone’s connection to Chicago history, the city where the radicalphabet was born.

Letters in search of artists

The Radicalphabet is attracting so many interesting, talented, rad artists!  I am totally loving connecting with all these different folks in different places and excited to see how this all comes together.  Letters are being snatched up like hotcakes!  We still need artists to create images for the following:

  • Disability Justice
  • Fat Positive
  • Immigrant Justice
  • Joy
  • Know Your Rights
  • Liberation
  • Movement Building
  • Oral Histories
  • Prison Abolition
  • Racial Justice
  • Values
  • Xylophone
  • Youth

In resistance to a dominant culture that often denies people the right to represent their own communities and lived realities, we want to emphasize the importance of artists’ personal identities/experiences connecting to the concepts they are representing.  So, if you or someone you know identifies strongly with one of the above ideas and wants to create an image to accompany the words, please let us know!

Q
When can we order a copy??? Such a great idea! :)

Thanks! We’re not sure when copies will be available as we’re still in the early stages of soliciting artists, but we’ll post here when they are ready and/or you can send us your e-mail at radicalphabet@gmail.com to be added to our mailing list and get updates.
